Project 2
First of all I would like to apologize to the class for not being able to participate in project 2 critique. I could not participate because my father passed away on 02/20/2017. Losing my father took a toll on me. We were very close and he was my only surviving parent. Indeed, it took a toll but it also inspired me in project 2. I was able to create a Diptych that I am proud of. In the beginning of project 2 I was lost because I never painted as an adult. However, as a child I painted in third and fourth grade art class. When creating the swatch and color wheel boards in the beginning, both were challenging. Challenging because I would use too much paint and not enough water. Too much water and not enough paint, it was as if I could not win. I had to work to find that happy medium. Once I found it things start to get better.
Using my father for inspiration helped me to create a Diptych that shows boldness and anger. While also showing peace and tranquility within the second composition. I used the color blue with black shade in the first composition because it calms the fire red with white tint. The fire red and blue geometric shapes have a contrasting effect. The lighter blues that I used seems to have a calming effect while the darker blues seems cold. Moreover, the reds seems to have a hot or fire effect. The white around the circles seems to have a cooling effect. The geometrical shapes that I used for composition 1 were triangles, hexagons, trapezoids, circles, rectangles, and squares. I also used open circles. Using these shapes in the way that I did seems to make the piece harmonious. It also works well with composition 2 because it looks as though the circles are going to roll the triangles onto the landscape which is composition 2.
I created a calming landscape for the second composition because it helps to calm the first composition. In the landscape composition, there is an emphasis on the imperfect tree. This is because it has more of the geometrical shapes than the others. Moreover, imperfect things has a beauty of its own. I used green with light and dark tints. I also used shades for dramatic effect. The browns worked well with tints, tones, and shades. The sharpness of the small tree in the background seem to be slightly blurred. This adds to the effect that the tree is in the distance. I really enjoyed project 2 it allowed me to get through some of the grief. I love to paint now and look forward to painting long after this course.
