For the first part of this assignment, I went to the second floor of the art building and took etchings of surfaces that caught my interest. I ended up choosing the etching with the long vertical lines. Despite making several sketches of the lines, I didn't like how they were turning out. So I just went with one of my samples, and began my collage. I chose the items for my collage based on springtime. Daffodils because I like to plant flower bulbs; you are rewarded with your hard work in the fall with spring flowers. And the flowers signify that winter is finally over. I chose a thunderstorm because I love spring storms. I picked the image of a woman on a bike because I like seeing pretty women riding bikes in the springtime. I used the Berlin TV tower and cherry blossoms because a bike path in Berlin by where I used to live was lined with cherry blossom trees. The whole path is decorated with pink flowers in the spring. It's really beautiful to ride down the path as the pink petals fall like snow.
When working with the black paper, I changed my layout a bit. First of all, I cut off an edge, but decided to keep it in my composition because it added an element of interest. I really like how the diagonal lines turned out on the black paper, I feel like the paper captured the lines much better than my sketch did. I simplified the woman on the bike to just her hair, lips, legs and her dress. I like how this part of the project turned out. If I had had more time, I would have added more flowers. That's the only thing I would change.
Overall, this was an interesting project, using only paper to represent texture. It was fun trying to figure out how to make something 3D, or how to convey a texture, like the softness of the clouds.
